What To Expect

Reaching out for help with your mental health is a courageous step, and it's okay to feel anxious about your first counselling session. To ease your mind, here are some insights into what to expect during your initial appointment.

Your first online session will be an opportunity to get to know each other. I will provide an overview of how the session will unfold. I will briefly share a few details about my background, qualifications, and experience. Feel free to ask any questions you are considering about the process, counselling approach, or treatment model.

During the first appointment, we'll discuss various questions to understand the challenges you're facing. There are no right or wrong answers, so please be open and honest. All sessions are conducted in a caring, non-judgmental manner, and you only need to share what you're comfortable with.

We'll also clarify your expectations for counselling and work towards establishing clear therapy goals by the end of the session. I may ask about your previous counselling experiences to understand what has been helpful for you.

Our discussion will cover how the counselling service works, addressing confidentiality, session entitlement, timing, and cancellation policies. This is to ensure you have a clear understanding of the service and can make an informed decision.

A few tips to keep in mind:

  • While there's no need to prepare anything beforehand, making a list of topics you'd like to discuss can be helpful.

  • It is important to manage your expectations about counselling. It's a part of the bigger picture in your mental health journey, not an instant fix.

  • I'll create a safe, supportive environment for you to explore your thoughts and experiences and guide you in developing effective coping strategies and increasing self-awareness.

  • Counselling may initially feel emotionally draining. After the session, take time for self-reflection and self-care.

If you don't see immediate changes, don't lose hope. Counselling is a process with ups and downs, and it's okay to feel frustrated at times. Remember, just showing up for your appointments takes immense courage and dedication, and that's worth celebrating.
